If you are thinking of visiting the East Neuk of Fife, in Scotland, with it’s pretty fishing villages, white washed houses and long coastal walks, I can highly recommend booking into Seaglass Cottage in Pittenweem. As soon as you step in, you can tell this modern and homely cottage is going to be good. It feels cosy and warm. Cream walls, with a subtle nautical theme with blues and burnt oranges, and excellent quality fixtures and fittings show that the owners have thought very carefully about exactly what visitors might want. On the ground floor there is the kitchen, with a large breakfast table, and plenty of plates, cups, cutlery and utensils, all following the seaside theme of blue and white which I thought was a nice touch. The family sized bathroom is also on this floor with a good over-the-bath shower, and there is also the first double bedroom with beautiful bedside tables and more than enough storage. Halfway up the stairs to the top floor a stable door leads you out to a big garden with table and chairs and another set of stairs (outside) leads you to a little surprise I’ll tell you about later. On the top floor are the other two bedrooms – a kids room with pine bunk beds, and another double room, a small toilet and the star attraction – the large cosy living room, with very comfy leather sofas and a log burning stove. Throughout this cottage the owners have paid a lot of attention to the detail. The vestibule has a good selection of buckets and spades etc for the kids to take down to the beach. The living room has a fantastic choice of DVD’s and CD’s as well as games for the kids and adults. The kitchen has every utensil you might ever need. The whole cottage is clean and modern with small homely touches like the wooden fishes around the mirrors, the recipe books in the kitchen and the fairy lights in the living room. There are also several individual pieces that I am positive have been upcycled like an amazing lamp in the living room, and the bedside table in the bedroom has a map of the East Neuk on the top. The surprise outside and down the stairs is the games room! I spent far too long in here, playing foosball, darts and air hockey. I read that they are also adding table tennis. This is a stroke of genius by the owners and will probably be a major selling point, especially for families, my daughter did not want to leave! A two minute walk to the harbour and just round the corner from shops, pubs and restaurants this cottage is in a superb location. Pittenweem has a thriving, bustling harbour, so an early walk down to watch the fishing boats arrive with their catch is a must. The narrow, winding lanes leading down to the shore are filled with pretty galleries and studios for the villages’ more than 30 designers, artists and crafts people. The chip shop sells delicious fish, and don’t forget to visit the Cocoa Tree for a scrumptious hot chocolate.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Seaglass Cottage and I’d like to thank the owners for having me. My opinions are, as always, my own. You can see more of the cottage and book here – http://www.myseaglasscottage.co.uk.
